Dhikr (or Zihr) is a islamic devotional act involving the remembrance, the chanting, and repeating of the names of God. Though this often happens in silence, the Sufi tend to have ritualized group ceremonies ranging in style from the Whirling Dervishes of the Mevlevi to the fervid dancing of the Chechen.
And here's the kind you see weekly at one of Lahore's well-known Sufi shrines, the mazaar of Baba Shah Jamal.

Watched a couple of minutes of the whirling dervishes. There is only so long one can watch dervishes whirl.

Also, Howling for God
Wow, I guess every religion has an equivalent to Christian gospel music. Sufism especially seems to focus on the Ecstatic. Thanks for the post.

Untrue. There are woman-only dhikr circles, and mixed ones as well.

Not me. I've always wanted to see this. A few years ago, The Amazing Race ran through Turkey and featured a clue hidden amoungst some whirling dervishes. If I'd been a contestant, I think that would've been the end of the race right there.
